Full Moon Suicide: Scientists May Have Figured Out Why Lunar Events Contribute to an Increase in Self-Harm

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:01:53 GMT

Suicides need to be talked about more — but finding ways to prevent suicides is even more important. One solution is by discussing with your loved ones if you have suicidal ideations. On the other hand, reaching out to those whom you think are in trouble should also be done. But learning some of the causes of suicides can also be a solution. Recently, scientists came up with another hypothesis as to why there’s an increase in suicides whenever there’s a full moon — this phenomenon, apparently, has been happening for thousands of years. The Correlation Between Lunar Events and Full Moon SuicideHas the full moon always been observed to contribute to the increase in suicides or mental illnesses? The phenomenon of full moon suicide may have been noticed as early as the Roman times. Philosophers Aristotle and Pliny the Elder argued that the “nocturnal dew” was what caused lunacy and epilepsy during the full moon phase.Though we can no longer trace who coined the word “lunatic,” the Merriam...

‘Beau’ director Ari Aster is not afraid to freak people out

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:01:53 GMT

Beau may be afraid but Ari Aster certainly isn’t.Of the many words used to describe the writer-director’s previous two films — “Hereditary” and “Midsommar” — timidity was never of them. This is a filmmaker who has sent Toni Collette skittering across the ceiling and intricately arranged mutilated bodies the way some people make bouquets. But if any doubts remained about just how far Aster is willing to go, “Beau Is Afraid” should pacify them. Not because of the degree of terror within it; by Aster’s high standards, “Beau Is Afraid” is notably less ghastly than his first two outings. But it’s even more audaciously grotesque, more self-evidently pulled from its director’s psyche, more a work of a filmmaker’s unfiltered, runaway imagination.Rather than slotting in as a “horror” film, it can be categorized a little less neatly as a surreal three-hour Homeric odyssey about Jewish guilt, Oedipal...

I borrow from his spirits. He is in very good hands.”Nagbe said the trauma remains evident. She said her 16-year-old son is “able to communicate mostly when he feels like it, but mostly he just sits there and stares and the buckets of tears just rolls down his eyes.”“You can see that he is just replaying the situation over and over again, and that just doesn’t stop my tears either,” she said.Kansas City police said the shooter, 84-year-ol...

SF Giants: The swing change that has keyed J.D. Davis’ early success

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:01:53 GMT

MIAMI — Gabe Kapler likes to see his players outside of their typical environment, the baseball world, which can too often feel like its own bubble. So one day this spring, the Giants manager invited one of the club’s relatively new additions, J.D. Davis, out for a meal. They got to talking, and the conversation turned to what Davis wanted to achieve in 2023.“Let’s just say he had really lofty goals. Coming off the sort of part-time player he was for us last year and the part-time player he was with the Mets, it was hard to visualize some of the goals that he had,” Kapler said. “Because how was he going to be that regular of a player for us?”Almost three weeks into the season, Davis hasn’t only forced his way into regular playing time, those goals don’t look so lofty anymore.Entering Tuesday’s game against the Marlins, Davis leads the team in home runs (4) and RBIs (13). Eighteen of his 35 balls in play have left the bat at 95 mph or h...
